WHAT IS COVID-19?

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a new strain of the virus. This virus is similar to other respiratory viruses though not much similar because of its rapid mutation. The disease causes respiratory illnesses showing symptoms like coughing, shortness of breath, sneezing, running nose, throat discomfort and even flu.Source

The World Health Organization on March 3^rd gave 3 Case definitions on COVID-19 in its report based upon the severity of the cases.Source

Suspected cases: A Person who is facing respiratory illness (fever and at least one sign/symptom of respiratory disease (e.g., cough, shortness of breath), AND with no other etiology which could fully explain the clinical presentation AND a history of travel to or residence in a country or region whcih is reporting of local transmission of COVID-19 disease during the 14 days prior to symptom onset.

OR

A person with any acute respiratory illness AND have been in contact with a confirmed or probable COVID19 case in the last 14 days prior to onset of symptoms.

OR

A person with severe acute respiratory illness (fever and at least one sign/symptom of respiratory disease (e.g., cough, shortness breath) AND requiring hospitalization AND with no other etiology that fully explains the clinical presentation.

Probable cases:A suspect case for whom testing for COVID-19 is inconclusive. • The result of the test is reported by the laboratory.

Confirmed cases:A person with laboratory confirmation of COVID-19 infection, irrespective of clinical signs and symptoms.
